If I get piece-rate pay, can I ask for overtime?

Under federal and California wage and hour law, if you are compensated bypiece-rate pay, contract pay, commission, or salary, you are stillentitled to overtime pay unless you are properly classified as an exempt employee.

The law requires that overtimebe paid for any time worked over 8 hours in a day or 40 hours in aweek, at 1 ½ times the employee’s regular rate. Any work over 12 hoursper day must be compensated as double time.

Television cable installers, computer programmers, outside sales representatives, and assistant managers are commonly expected to work unpaid overtime.
